Drip Irrigation Setup

  • The drip line equation:

RunTime  x  EmitterOutput(per hour)  x  (#of Emitters)  =  WaterVolume

Example: 1 hr  x  10 gallon output  x  3 emitters  =  30 gallons

  • Which emitters should I use?  We recommend using 5 or 10 gallon emitters, so that you don’t have to run your drip system for more than an hour or two.

  • How many emitters do I need per tree?  It depends on the output of the emitters you’re using, but if you’re using 10 gal emitters as outlined above, 3-4 emitters per tree should be adequate. Space them out a little to ensure that they’ll moisten both the original rootball and the surrounding soil. This will encourage the tree to spread its roots.

  • How long should I run my drip system?  We like to shoot for a run-time of about 60 to 90 minutes, but you’ll need to adjust the system run-time as you go, checking soil moisture every few days at first, to make sure your tree is getting the right amount of water. The goal is simply to keep the soil from ever fully drying out, but you don’t want it to be constantly wet either. Dig down a few inches if you’re unsure; if you can’t feel moisture, your new tree probably can’t access moisture.
