This tree’s exfoliating bark creates a whitish, mottled trunk, while its large leaves make for great shade.


  • Mature Size: 50’ Tall x 35’ Wide

    Annual Growth: 18-36”

    Specific Maintenance: Wrap the trunk for the first few years after planting, to help prevent winter injury.

    General Maintenance: Regular watering, Structural Pruning (every 5-10 yrs), Annual balanced fertilizer (May-June, slow-release), Protect from deer.

  • Benefits:

    Dense foliage, pyramidal form, good growth rate, great cold-hardiness, wind tolerant, drought tolerant, soil adaptable, no pest or disease issues (Exclamation is anthracnose resistant).

    Drawbacks:

    Dust from this tree can be somewhat irritating and induce sneezing. No fall color. Seed pods are soft and fairly small, drop in Fall; most people don’t mind them. Some leaves may hang on the tree all winter, dropping in spring (marsescence).
