This maple has large reddish leaves and a fairly round shape.

Specific Maintenance: To help prevent winter damage, wrap the trunk for the first few winters after planting, and if fall weather is warm and dry, keep soil moist. To reduce aphids and dripping sap, treat in spring with an insecticidal systemic drench. To prevent powdery mildew, spray tree with fungicide before bud break in the Spring and followup treatments according to label instructions.
General Maintenance: Regular watering, Structural Pruning (every 5-10 yrs), Annual balanced fertilizer (May-June, slow-release), Protect from deer.

Benefits:
Bronze-Orange fall color, moderate growth rate, great cold-hardiness, wind tolerant, drought tolerant, soil adaptable (but avoid heavy clay).
Drawbacks:
Heavily planted in our area, high fungal disease transmission (Powdery mildew & Verticillium wilt). Large seeds drop in late summer-early fall, may seem somewhat messy. Seeds germinate readily in our climate. Powdery mildew fungus and annual aphid infestations can be treated.
